Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • CPR (Cardio-pulmonary Resucitation) is a life saving procedure which is instituted artificially in order to mantain oxygen and nutrent supply to the vital organs of the body in crisisof arrested pulmonary and circulatory function .

  • It consists of


a. External cardiac massage


  • The chest is compressed 100 times per minutes with 2 rescue breath after 30 compressions[Q],


b. Artificial ventilation


  • It is given mouth to mouth rescue breathing or using a mechanical ventilator.

  • Two rescue breaths are given after 30 chest compressions

  • Procedure of CPR for Adult:


Check for danger



Check responsiveness



Shout for help



Open airway



Not breathing normally?



30 chest compressions 2 rescue breaths

Attach to AED (automated external defibrillators) as soon as available



Continue CPR until signs of life returns or qualified help arrives


  • CPR should be at least 30 minutes.


  • The Chest Compression is 5cm deep or 2 inch but not more than 2.4 inches in adult. New Borns = 1.5 inch


  • CPR 3-5 minute = Give Adrenalin = Adult one Ampoule (1ml): 1000 mcg/ml (1:1000) = IV


  • Mouth to mouth respiration is also known as 'Kiss of Life'. It is also Called Artificial Respiration.


  • BLS Basic Life Support = On the spot:


  1. Head Tilt → Chilt Lift → Jaw Thrust +

  2. Mouth to mouth Respiration

  3. Artificial Manual Breathing Unit (AMBU) bag RespirationRespiration

  • -Complications of bystander CPR included rib fracture, lung injuries such as pneumothorax and lung contusion, abdominal organ injuries such as hepatic, splenic and gastric injuries, and chest and/or abdominal pain requiring analgesics.
